It is with deepest sorrow that Bass & Flinders Distillery mourns the very sudden passing of Bob Laing, our co-founder and chief distiller, on Wednesday 17 February 2016.
After a career as an engineer working in Australia and overseas, Bob took up the challenge of another opportunity to apply his knowledge, experience and passion on the Mornington Peninsula at Bass & Flinders Distillery.
His desire to create a unique and successful distilling business has drawn the respect and admiration of all those who worked with him. He was a true entrepreneur. His willingness to challenge boundaries and overcome difficulties has pushed the Bass and Flinders business and brand to new levels; and this is his true professional legacy.
He was often seen around Red Hill accompanied by his faithful canine friend, Lucy. We will greatly miss his presence and enthusiasm and that twinkle in his eye, which was so much a part of the Bass & Flinders brand. At Bass & Flinders Distillery, we are proud to be one of the very few distilleries in the world to be creating all our own base spirit using Australian Chardonnay and Shiraz grapes.
Sadly Bob died before seeing the launch of his new creation, ‘Angry Ant Gin’. These initiatives are some examples of Bob’s creative flair and vision. We will continue to push limits and create products that are unique and extraordinary to ensure Bob’s legacy is not forgotten.
Our condolences go to his wife, Jackie, and his family.
