Heartbreak Gin is for lovers of Pinot Noir and gin alike and represents Bass & Flinders Distillery's natural progression from producing grape-based spirits to fortifying Mornington Peninsula's premier grape variety - Pinot Noir, with gin.

Pinot Noir consistently ranks amongst the world's most prestigious drops. Finesse and grace are its strengths but it's well known as a fickle variety to grow. In the vineyard it breaks the heart of many growers, and once in the winery pinot noir is the most honest of all wines, leaving zero tolerance for mistakes. Great pinot noirs are achieved by a lightness of touch and by taking great care. This is why Pinot Noir is known as the Heartbreak grape.

Heartbreak Gin is ruby red with purple hues. Complex and perfumed with notes of sweet red fruit, spice and floral highlights. Sweet spice carried by our eau de vie grape based spirit distilled on-site sweeps through the palate opening up into brooding dark pinot noir fruits finishing pleasantly textural and savoury with juniper, herbal and oak nuances. Think fresh, floral and fruity.

Heartbreak Gin’s natural sweetness derived from winemaking fortification techniques is expertly balanced with classic juniper forward notes and fresh. fruity, floral undertonesA combination of classic and native Australian botanicals are carefully selected to truly reflect the unique aromas and flavours associated with pinot noir grown on the Mornington Peninsula.

Raspberry and pepperberry seamlessly meld the pinot noir ferment into the gin world. Botanical highlights of rosemary, sage and strawberry gum round out the palate and accentuate the bright raspberry and lavender notes traditionally affiliated with Mornington Peninsula region pinot noir. The small parcel of fruit was hand pressed and fortified with juniper spirit ceasing fermentation without the use of preservatives to create our annual limited release 2023 Heartbreak Pinot Noir Gin.

Heartbreak Gin is dedicated to those who love to sip and savour a glass of pinot noir but don’t want to waste a whole bottle. One of our gins in the range with a food matching focus including our Orient Gin and Maritime Gin.

Bass & Flinders Distillery Méthode Eau de Vie spirits distillation process

unique distillation method

Méthode eau de vie

This gin was handcrafted from scratch using our 'Méthode Eau de Vie' - the art of distilling wine into spirit.

Here at Bass & Flinders we are dedicated to the true art of distillation. This means that rather than source neutral ethanol externally as the base spirit for this product, we choose to go the extra mile and distil our own premium grape-based spirit from scratch, in-house.

This technique unique to Bass & Flinders Distillery products we refer to as our Méthode Eau de Vie.

Bass & Flinders Distillery Méthode Eau de Vie spirits distillation process

The ultimate spirit

unique to us

Our process starts in the Victorian vineyards, where in conjunction with our winemaker, we have a say in the sugar levels, ripeness of fruit, PH and acidity - because all these elements - at the right levels - combine to create the perfect wine needed to distil into our grape spirit.

This grape spirit is called eau de vie - French for 'Water of Life'. This base spirit is the lifeline and foundation for every product we produce. It tells a story of the vintage and vineyards it was sourced from and delivers a smoother, fuller, richer base to deliver the ultimate gin experience.

HANDCRAFTED ARTISANAL SPIRITS

Bass & Flinders was one of the earlier established Australian distilleries, and the first distillery on the Mornington Peninsula. The inspiration for founding a distillery surrounded by vineyards was simple – stay true to our region through use of local produce wherever possible, and the distillation of grapes to produce fine spirits.
